Funding for RWTH Physicists
The Federal Ministry of Education and Research, BMBF, provides funding for the further development of the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. RWTH physicists have now been granted 9.4 million Euros in funding for their involvement in the international research project.
At the European research center CERN, a new stage is about to begin with the further development of the detectors of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the world’s largest particle collider.
The improved detectors shall be capable of more precisely measuring the extremely small particles that are generated through collisions and of recording 1.5 billion events per second.
The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) finances the development and construction of detector components.
"We support the participation of excellent universities in a worldwide leading research facility and thus make it possible for our young researchers to participate in international top-level research,” explains Parliamentary Secretary of State Thomas Rachel, who presented the grant certificate for 9.4 million Euros to RWTH Aachen University.
In total, in the upcoming three-year funding period, the BMBF will provide 19 million Euros each year for several university research groups in Germany participating in the project at CERN. This support is granted in addition to the BMBF’s regular funding contribution to CERN, which amounts to 182 million Euros annually.
