ENHANCE, the European Universities of Technology Alliance, a network of seven technical universities including RWTH, is set to receive funding from the European Commission. Over the next three years, the alliance, coordinated by Technische Universität Berlin, will receive five million euros to establish structures that facilitate the seamless mobility of students and university employees.
The aim of the European Universities Initiative is to improve the quality, reputation, and international competitiveness of European higher education and to strengthen the collaboration between universities in Europe.
In particular, in addition to enhancing student and researcher mobility, ENHANCE aims to reduce bureaucratic barriers and provide more flexible opportunities in education and research. RWTH’s key responsibility will be to advance diversity and equality of opportunities within the alliance, contributing its comprehensive experience and expertise in this area.
ENHANCE is made up of seven European innovative technical universities: Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden; Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Norway; Politecnico di Milano, Italy; RWTH Aachen University, Germany; Technische Universität Berlin, Germany; Universitat Politècnica de València, Spain; and Warsaw University of Technology, Poland.
The concept for the European Universities has been developed by EU member states, higher education institutions and student organizations after French president Emmanuel Macron delivered the key idea for the initiative in his widely noted speech delivered in 2017 at Sorbonne University, Paris.
In 2019, 300 universities from all 28 member states participated in the first call, submitting proposals for 54 alliances, 17 of which were approved for funding. ENHANCE is one of 24 newly approved alliances to receive funding following the second call for proposals.
