On the Credibility Crisis of the Sciences
On Thursday, November 19, on the occasion of the Unesco World Philosophy Day, the Institute of Philosophy will hosts a guest lecture titled "Science, Business, Politics: On the Credibility Crisis of the Sciences." The lecture is part of the "Philosophy Colloquium" lecture series.
Seeking to highlight the importance of philosophy, the UNESCO General Conference established the World Philosophy Day in 2005. According to UNESCO, philosophy is a discipline that encourages critical and independent thought and is capable of working towards a better understanding of the world.
On the occasion of the World Philosophy Day 2015 and as part of the Philosophy Colloquium lecture series, the Institute of Philosophy at RWTH Aachen has invited Professor Martin Carrier from the University of Bielefeld to talk on the credibility crisis of the sciences.
The lecture focuses on the commercialization and politicization of science as reasons for the public’s increasing skepticism towards science. Professor Carrier will discuss approaches to resolving this crisis, such as strengthening the independence of research and academic freedom and the re-politicization of science: scientific work shall be once again perceived as serving society’s needs.
The lecture will take place at 6pm at the Pausenhalle of the Institute of Philosophy, Eilfschornsteinstraße 16, 52062 Aachen. Anyone interested is invited to attend.
