Title

Creating an alternative material to produce protective face masks

Concept

Personal protective equipment (PPE) like FFP2 masks are key to contain the COVID-19 spread. PPE is made from polypropylene fabrics that filter micro-particles and virus-containing droplets. Production of PPE is mainly in China. Competition for PPE is so high that even highly developed countries face severe gaps. We plan to solve the shortage through alternative high performance PPE fabric, which is cheap, easily available, washable and reusable, for use in masks that match FFP2 performance. Target group: medical professionals in EU and developing countries, where the PPE shortage is massive. Initial product: masks that remove 95% of particles and droplets with >0.6 micrometer diameter, limit exhale leakage (<10%), made from readily available materials, produced in regular garment factories, ideally with self-disinfecting and absorbent properties. Impact: create supply of alternative high performance PPE very fast, at scale, in and for EU and developing countries.
