Guest Lecture on Natural Catastrophes in Antiquity

On January 13, 2016, the Chair of Ancient History at the RWTH Institute of History will host a guest lecture by Professor Mischa Meier from the University of Tübingen. The lecture is titled "The 'Plague of Justinian' – The Economic- and Cultural-Historical Impact of a Pandemic."  

The guest lecture, which has been organized by the Neotectonics and Natural Hazards Teaching and Research Unit at RWTH Aachen, is part of the interdisciplinary Leonardo Project on the topic of natural catastrophes in antiquity.

Professor Meier, Chair of Ancient History at the University of Tübingen, is well-known nationally and internationally for his publications on ancient history. In his habilitation thesis, titled "Das andere Zeitalter Justinians. Kontingenzerfahrung und Kontingenzbewältigung im 6. Jahrhundert nach Christus" ("The Other Justinian Age: Experiencing and Coping with Contingency in the 6th Century CE"), Meier provides a convincing portrait of the emperor Justinian and his age.

The lecture, which will be held in German, will take place in Lecture Hall AH VI, Ahornstraße 55, starting at 6pm.
