Our Profile

The chair of Active Energy Distribution Grids (AEV) at the Institute for High Voltage Equipment and Grids, Digitalization and Energy Economics (IAEW) is part of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at RWTH Aachen University. We research future market designs, approaches to grid operation and planning, and challenges of system resilience in multimodal energy systems.

The chair’s focus lies in the design of futureproof decentralized energy systems under the influence of upcoming challenges such as electromobility. The basis of our research are methods of mathematical optimization and simulation, as well as practical investigations in our distribution grid lab. This unique lab environment can be used to develop innovative concepts and technologies for future grid operation using real components in a real medium and low voltage grid. The integration of ICT provides optimal conditions for research into various topics such as digitalization of energy systems and cyber security.

Your Profile

You enrich us with an outstanding motivation and enthusiasm for technological, ecological and economical challenges of the energy transition. You have a very good university degree (M.Sc. or equivalent) in the fields electrical or mechanical engineering, computer science, physics or similar.

Besides an interest in our research areas you are well versed in self-organization, responsibility, and a creative and solution-oriented way of working. You can convince us with advanced programming knowledge (one object-oriented language – we mostly work with Python, C++ and Matlab) and/or practical experiences in laboratory environments. As part of this position you have the intent of pursuing a doctorate degree in a topic related to our projects.

You are fluent in German and English and a communicative person.

Your Duties and Responsibilities

  • Involvement in and acquisition and coordination of national and international research and industry projects within small project teams
  • Development of simulation and modelling tools for research in decentralized energy systems
  • Implementation of innovative technologies and concepts in our lab environment
  • Development of new academic coursework and independent supervision of final theses

What We Offer

The successful candidate will be employed under a regular employment contract.
The position is to be filled at the earliest possible date and offered for a fixed term of one year.
It is intended to extend the initial contract period by four further years.
The fixed-term employment is possible as it constitutes one of the fixed-term options of the Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz (German Act on Fixed-term Scientific Contracts).
This is a full-time position.
The successful candidate has the opportunity to pursue a doctoral degree in this position.
The salary is based on the German public service salary scale (TV-L).
The position corresponds to a pay grade of EG 13 TV-L.
