Our Profile
The CSSH (Computational Social Sciences and Humanities) group, headed by Prof. Dr. Jürgen Lerner, is a research group at RWTH Aachen interested in understanding social systems and modeling human behavior using computational methods and new kinds of data.
Our group belongs to the Faculty of Philosophy. RWTH ranks among the eleven German universities which were successful in the Universities of Excellence funding line.

We are looking for a Postdoc, or advanced Phd student, starting in April 2023 (or until filled) until March 2025, and would be pleased to welcome you as part of our team.
Your Profile
You have a doctorate/PhD in a discipline related with computational methods or quantitative data analysis, including but not limited to computer science, statistics, physics, mathematics, or (quantitative) social science.
You have expertise in one or several of the following areas:
- (social) network analysis;
- natural language processing, text analysis;
- machine learning, artificial intelligence;
- statistical data modeling and analysis;
- efficient algorithms for real-world problems, algorithm engineering.
You can work with large data sets and with software and libraries for network analysis, data science, and machine learning.
You are interested in applying methods in the empirical social sciences.
You are dedicated, autonomous, and creative.
You have experience in teaching and in supervising students.
You have excellent English-language skills and are willing to learn German.
Your Duties and Responsibilities
Your Duties and Responsibilities:
As member of our CSSH team, you will do cutting-edge research in the computational social sciences and humanities.
You will supervise students working on related topics.
You will be involved in the teaching duties of the group (4 contact hours).
You will participate in academic administration and support external funds projects.
You will present your work at national and international conferences and publish in leading journals in our discipline.
What We Offer
The successful candidate will be employed under a regular employment contract.
The position is to be filled by 4/1/2023 and offered for a fixed term up to March 31, 2025.
The fixed-term employment is possible as it constitutes one of the fixed-term options of the Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz (German Act on Fixed-term Scientific Contracts).
This is a full-time position.
The salary is based on the German public service salary scale (TV-L).
The position corresponds to a pay grade of EG 13 TV-L.
