Our Profile

The Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering WZL at RWTH Aachen University promotes the innovative strength and competitiveness of industry with trend-setting basic research, applied research and with resulting consulting and implementation projects in the field of industrial production and develops practical solutions for future-oriented value creation systems with industrial partners from different sectors. Within the Industrial Internet of Things research group, the Department of Automation and Control Technology at the Chair of Machine Tools deals with complex issues that are thematically located at the interface between mechanical engineering and computer science. The Industrial Internet of Things is the use of smart sensors, actuators and other devices, such as radio frequency transceivers, to improve manufacturing and industrial processes. Within the Industrial Internet of Things, devices are generally networked together to collect, share and analyze data. The insights gained from these processes contribute to greater efficiency and reliability. Wireless communication in particular is increasingly becoming an indispensable part of smart manufacturing and already plays a central role. The development and evaluation of powerful sensor technologies, hardware interfaces and communication protocols for the effective interaction of the different actors within so-called wireless sensor-actuator networks is therefore an important subject of current research and at the same time a content-related component of the advertised position. Our environment offers many opportunities for personal development and opens up the following potential perspectives to you, for example:

  • Collaboration in research operations within the topic complex Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) / Industrial Cyber-Physical Systems (ICPS) / Wireless Sensor and Actuator Networks (WSAN)
  • Expansion and sharpening of your competence portfolio through scientific work
  • Collaboration on scientific contributions
  • Flexible working hours (e.g. consideration of exam dates)
  • If interested, the opportunity to write a thesis, if applicable

Your Profile

  • You already have some programming skills in C, C++, Python or other programming languages
  • You are currently studying mathematics, physics or computer science or engineering sciences
  • You have very good English skills

You are interested? We are happy to hear that! Please send your application documents (short letter of motivation, CV and current grades, optional: with a link to your GitHub profile or other references regarding programming experience from private, university and professional projects) preferably via email in a PDF file to the specified contact person.

Your Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supporting the programming of applications for the analysis of sensor data as well as their visualization
  • Preparation, execution and follow-up of experiments
  • Collaboration in scientifically based literature searches
