Fire at RWTH's Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering

Due to a fire on February 5, 2016, one of the machine halls of the Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering, WZL, was destroyed. Fortunately, there were no injuries.

 

The fire department succeeded in preventing the spread of the flames to nearby buildings on campus.

In a press conference on February 5, Professor Günther Schuh, the Director of the Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering, stated that according to a first estimation, the fire caused a financial damage of about 50 million Euros.

The exact cause of the fire is not known as yet; investigations are underway. As the fire has also damaged the IT infrastructure, the WZL website is currently not fully operational.
