RWTH student Wafic El Sabbagh was awarded the 2020 DAAD Prize for his outstanding academic achievements and intercultural engagement.

Rector Ulrich Rüdiger presented the award during the RWTH Welcome Week for international students, which has held online this year. The award from the German Academic Exchange Service, worth 1000 euros, honors outstanding international students at German universities.

Wafic El Sabbagh, a 21-year old Civil Engineering student from Lebanon, has been enrolled at RWTH since the 2018/19 winter semester. Not only is Wafic an excellent student, he is also a dedicated volunteer with the “Europa macht Schule” project at the Aachen Rhein-Maas secondary school. Furthermore, as a “buddy” in RWTH’s BeBuddy program, he supports new students from abroad in the process of settling into university life in Aachen.

Wafic is actively involved in the “Aktion Sodis e.V.“ initiative, where he is leading a work group concerned with research on and development of a low-cost ventilator for coronavirus patients. He also supports “Café Weltweit,” a meeting point for students and individuals with a migrant background.
