The Future of Brown Coal
On June 28, researchers and external experts will convene at RWTH Aachen's SuperC to discuss challenges for the brown coal mining sector. The one day conference will focus on technological solutions, legal responsibilities of the sector, and the future role of brown coal in Germany.
At the conference, Peter Franke, Vice-President of Germany’s Bundesnetzagentur, will talk on the boundary conditions for the future energy mix. Dr. Alexandra Renz from the Office of the NRW Prime Minister will provide information on the ministry’s roadmap for the future of the North Rhine-Westphalian “Garzweiler II” lignite opencast mining area.
Aside from talks by representatives from RWE Power AG and RWE Generation, there will be a presentation by the RWTH Institute of Mine Surveying, Mining Subsidence Engineering and Geophysics in Mining on the analysis of soil movements in the Rhenish brown coal fields. Professor Walter Frenz from the Department of Mining, Environmental and European Law will address the topic of accountability for seismic events due to a rise in groundwater.
Furthermore, Professor Peter Vossen from the Institute of Mineral Resources Engineering will present the concept for a multi-functional lake landscape for the Inden lignite opencast mining area.
The ABK Conference is jointly hosted by RWTH Aachen University and the GDMB Society of Metallurgists and Miners. The conference language ist German.
