Thomas Muhr Receives Honorary Doctorate from RWTH Aachen

Muhr studied business administration and metallurgy at RWTH Aachen. He completed both his undergraduate and doctoral studies with honors. Since 1998 he has been a managing partner of Mubea. With 28 offices in Germany and abroad and around 10,000 employees it is one of the most important automotive suppliers in the world. This development was significantly shaped by Thomas Muhr. His contributions include broadening the spectrum of products, which currently includes springs, engines, chassis, transmissions, and bodies. His superior technical knowledge is evident in the more than 60 patents, which touch upon his ideas.
Lightweight Construction of Automotive Parts
The lightweight construction of automotive parts is at the center of the 53-year-old Muhr's focus; at the University of Siegen he helped establish an endowed professorship for integrative lightweight construction. The use of fiber-reinforced plastics instead of steel, a new manufacturing process for body components with varying wall thicknesses, and a higher material resilience are among his significant development approaches. The technical optimization of Mubea products also originated from collaboration with RWTH. The Institute of Metal Forming IBF, the Laboratory for Machine Tools WZL, the Institute of Plastics Processing IKV, and the Aachen Center for Integrative Lightweight Production AZL all worked together on innovative solutions with Mubea.
As an extradordinary businessman, Muhr understands how to successfully implement research results into product development or into the development of economic manufacturing processes and facilities. At the request of the Faculties of Mechanical Engineering and Georesources and Materials Engineering, the RWTH Senate approved the awarding of the honorary doctorate to recognize his outstanding engineering achievements in the field of materials and production engineering and his broad social commitment to education and research.
