Two RWTH Scholars Admitted to the "Junges Kolleg"
RWTH scholars Dr.-Ing. Christian Haase and Dr. Philipp Trotter have been inducted into the “Junges Kolleg” of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences, Humanities and the Arts.
This is one of the most important awards for young scholars in North Rhine-Westphalia. Up to 30 representatives of all disciplines can be inducted into the “Junges Kolleg” for a maximum of four years; they receive an annual stipend of 10,000 euros and are involved in the academy’s activities. A doctoral degree as well as exceptional academic and research achievements at one of the NRW universities or research institutions are among the prerequisites for election into the Junges Kolleg. At the time of admission, members may not be older than 36 years and may not yet hold a permanent university teaching position. Members have the opportunity to discuss their projects in interdisciplinary working groups there.
Christian Haase
Christian Haase studied mechanical engineering and materials science at Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg and earned his doctorate at RWTH. He completed several international research stays, including at the University of Ottawa, Canada and Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. Since 2016, the 35-year-old has headed the Integrated Computational Materials Engineering group at the Department of Materials Technology at the Steel Institute. He also leads the junior research group MatAM – Design of Additively Manufactured High-Performance Materials for the Automotive Industry. The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research is providing 1.6 million euros for this purpose. The funding is personal and linked to the leadership of the junior research group. Haase is also a member and reviewer of leading organizations and journals.
He conducts research on fundamental metal-physical mechanisms in high-performance metals, focusing on the microstructure and alloy design of new materials for individualized product development via additive manufacturing processes. Combining design, material, and processes enables a holistic, highly interdisciplinary research approach, which can result in the optimal exploitation of material properties. This creates a foundation for the successful implementation of additive manufacturing in Industry 4.0.
Philipp Trotter
Philipp Trotter studied industrial engineering at RWTH and was sponsored by the German National Academic Foundation and the German Academic Exchange Service – DAAD. He pursued stays abroad at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh and the University of California, Berkeley. From 2011 to 2014, he worked as a management consultant in the energy sector at McKinsey & Company and worked in South Africa, China, the US, and Germany. After completing a Master's degree at London School of Economics, he earned his doctorate “Sustainability Optimization of African Energy Systems” at the University of Bath. Since 2020, he has held a combined postdoctoral position at the University of Oxford and RWTH Aachen University. Trotter will also begin a Marie Skłodowska Curie Individual Fellowship in the Chair of Operations Management in May 2021. With this award, the European Union is funding a transdisciplinary research project in Uganda: "Decentralised Energy-Leveraging Transformation of African Development" (DELTADev). Here, Trotter combines the energy, transportation, and agricultural sectors in integrative value chains to realize synergies for sustainable development. He also volunteers for social enterprises.
Over 600 million people and large parts of rural value chains in Sub-Saharan Africa have no access to electricity. Electrification often fails due to a combination of financial, environmental, political, and social reasons. Trotter is conducting interdisciplinary research on this problem: He is developing mathematical supply chain optimization models, designs service-oriented business models for sustainable development, and analyzes policies that promote the private sector as a driver of sustainable development. Based on his research, Trotter has already advised the European Union, the International Renewable Energy Agency, several African governments, and companies in Uganda and Nigeria.
