RWTH Presents 2020 Teaching Award
The 2020 award recipients are Professor Sven Klinkel and the “Do It Yourself CAD/CAM Tutorial.”
RWTH has been awarding its “Instructor of the Year” and “Project of the Year” awards to honor excellence in the area of teaching and learning since 2001. Eligible to be nominated are instructors as well as teaching and learning initiatives.
The 2020 teaching award winners are Professor Sven Klinkel, holder of the Chair of Structural Analysis and Structural Dynamics, and the "Do It Yourself CAD/CAM Tutorial" project jointly conducted by the Clinic for Dental Prosthetics, Implantology and Biomaterials and the Audiovisual Media Center of Uniklinik RWTH Aachen. The awardees were nominated by RWTH students.
According to the students, Klinkel delivers exceptional teaching , and his efficient and transparent teaching and learning method prepares students to address the challenges of the future. Together with pedagogues, the civil engineer has developed a digital learning environment and, with “StatiGo,” provides an extensive set of assignment for students to complete. These guided assignments give students the opportunity to independently deepen and apply what they have learned in class. Kinkel is also Dean of Academic Affairs at the Faculty of Civil Engineering.
The “Do It Yourself CAD/CAM Tutorial“ makes it possible for fourth semester dentistry students to benefit from virtual teaching and virtual dental treatment methods. With the help of computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing, the students prepare an artificial dental crown for a simulation patient, the so-called “phantom head.” At the same time, they practice the ability to learn using online tutorials, a skill that is useful for lifelong learning. In addition they learn to critically review practical results with the help of 3D visualization.
The tutorial as been developed by Professor Sven Reich, Uli Heuter, Martin Lemos and Christina Kühne for fourth semester dentistry students.
