The German Resource Research Institute (GERRI) is online
In 2015, five leading German research institutions from the raw materials sector founded the virtual institute "GERRI" with the aim of strengthening German raw material research for international competition. The "German Resource Research Institute" has now reached an important stage by recording, categorizing and publicizing the national raw materialcompetencies and infrastructure of the founding partners in a database. The GERRI founding partners - TU Bergakademie Freiberg, RWTH Aachen University, Clausthal University of Technology, Fraunhofer project group for recycling and resource management IWKS at the Fraunhofer ISC and the Helmholtz-Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology (HIF) at the HZDR - have a unique broad spectrum of knowledge and experience in both, the basic and applied fields. The focus lies on high-tech metals and other economically important raw materials, which are indispensable for technological development.
The GERRI network provides access to a diverse technical infrastructure (measuring equipment, laboratory equipment) at various levels of research - from methods and processes through material flows to the elements of the periodic system.
GERRI has the following fields of expertise: exploration & mining, processing, hydrometallurgy, pyrometallurgy, materials, waste management, machinery, modeling and special analytics. The bundled (expert) knowledge within these fields of competence has been directly linked to material flows & elements of the relevant value chain. With the addition of new GERRI partners, the existing areas of competence will be further deepened and expanded.
GERRI is embedded in the "Research for Sustainable Development (FONA)" program of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), which is part of the funding program "r4 - Innovative Technologies for Resource Efficiency - Research on the Provision of Economic Strategic Raw Materials". Coordinator of the network is the Freiberg Helmholtz Institute. After the expiry of the five-year funding period, GERRI will continue to exist independently as a network and will be financed, among other things, by industrial and research funds.
