Description

Use the years of working on your thesis to you sharpen your professional academic profile - for a career in science / research / teaching - or for a career outside of the university.

Making that decision is certainly not easy - the sooner you decide, the easier it will be to plan your career strategically. Within academia you need other skills and qualifications as outside.

The workshop will help you to make this decision.

Procedure:

  • Prior to the workshop, you will receive two short exercises to prepare

  • During the workshop work practically, focusing on your career planning

  • During we the optional individual coaching (appointment via CDS) clarify personal questions

Objective

Participants are able to

  • use the knowledge about different requirements inside and outside of academia for their personal career planing

  • use the time of working on their thesis for sharpening their professional profile considering their career goal

  • consider all relevant facts on the two different job markets for their future career planning

Tools from the area of personnal development; exercises for self-exploration; keynotes on relevant facts; seminar script; feedback by trainer and colleagues

Content

During the workshop you will

  • Analyze, which field of work suits your personality traits, life and career desires and core competencies

  • Identify interesting and suitable fields of work in industry/public sector or science

  • Develop first steps of an appropriate career plan

  • If you are not ready to decide: develop an exit strategy (when and how should I get out of an academic career?) for your subsequent withdrawal from a more scientifically oriented career plan

  • If you are not ready to decide: you develop Plan B - possible routes back into science, if you do not like to work outside of academia

Participation Requirements

Participation:

  • To participate you need a laptop or computer with audio / video function (microphone and camera). You also need a stable internet connection.

  • You will receive an individual login code for the moodle course room for the workshop on 5 days before the preparation period latest

  • Preparation phase - prerequisite for participation: approx. 2 hours, on your own time: in the moodle course room you will find materials and tasks to prepare. If necessary, these tasks are supervised by the trainer.

  • On the online attendance date, we will work together on interactive learning situations from 9:00 am to around 1:30 pm (short breaks)

  • Transfer phase: approx. 2 hours, on your own time: in the moodle course room you will receive feedback, can ask further questions and exchange ideas with the trainer and the other participants.
