The focus of the course is on stimulating interactive communication and developing confident language usage through regular pair and group work, discussions and individual presentations. These participant-centred learning strategies will be supplemented by teacher-centred training, handouts and exercises.
The purpose of this course is to prepare attendees for professional communication and effective presentation at international conferences. After a needs analysis, participants will :
learn about effective ways of opening and closing their talks
study how to guide their audience through their presentations
work on their pronunciation and delivery
learn how to comment on their visuals
develop strategies for handling difficult questions
practise chairing and moderating discussions
learn how to network successfully
By taking part in role plays and presenting at least three times in the course of the semester, participants will gain more confidence in speaking English in an academic context and improve their delivery in general.
On completion of the seminar, participants will have:
acquired useful phrases and vocabulary for conference settings
improved their presentation skills, pronunciation and delivery
feel more confident when presenting at international conferences
Successful completion of this course is based on:
participation in all classroom activities
completion of home assignments
several short presentations.
The course will be taught entirely in English.
Course materials will be made available both in hardcopy and in digital format (via Moodle). Hyperlinks will also be provided in Moodle.
Participants should be able to communicate fluently in English (approximately C1 level or above). Hence, a placement test result or a corresponding international certificate (CAE; IELTS; TOEFL etc.) is required.
