Guest Lecture: GALILEOnautic

Automation and autonomous control are becoming more and more part of our everyday lives. New technologies are also being developed and applied in the shipping industry, as autonomous operation promises both higher efficiency and increased safety.

 

The requirements for the autonomous operation of ships are very high, in particular in highly busy harbors and harbor areas, including precise localization, cooperative maneuvering, and error-tolerant ship guidance systems.

The lecture will give an overview of the major developments in automation and highlight some of the latest progress in the maritime world.

Using the GALILEOnautic project as an example, the research required for the realization of autonomous navigation and cooperative maneuvering in harbors will be presented and discussed. An important contribution to autonomous shipping is made by the satellite navigation system Galileo, which will be in operation until 2020.

The lecture, held by René Zweigel from the Institute of Automatic Control, is titled “GALILEOnautic – Autonomous Shipping Traffic of the Future.” It is part of the Seas and Oceans lecture series at RWTH Aachen University.

The lecture, which will be given in German, is scheduled to take place on November 30, 2016, at 6:30 pm in Lecture Hall 4 at Kármán Auditorium, Eilfschornsteinstraße 15.
