The Riches of the Oceans and Marine Environmental Research

The Citizens’ Forum RWTHextern is hosting a lecture entitled “Of the Biological Riches of the Oceans and Challenges of Environmental Research.”

 

The speaker will be RWTH professor Dr. Henner Hollert, director of the Department of Ecosystem Analysis. The biologist will give an overview of the meaning of marine biodiversity, the oceans as a source of food and the challenges of marine environmental research.

The event will take place on Wednesday, December 14, 2016, at 6:30pm in lecture hall Fo4, Kármán-Auditorium, Eilfschornsteinstraße 15. Admission is free of charge.

The Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the Science in Dialogue initiative jointly host the 2016 Year of Science on the topic of "Seas and Oceans." Against this backdrop, RWTH Aache University is holding two public lectures.

Background

The seas and the oceans are a treasure trove and habitat of yet unknown biodiversity. At the same time they are an important source of food for humankind. Germans alone already eat 14 kilograms of fish per person per year. However, this natural bounty is severely threatened by overfishing as well as environmental toxins. Hardly another environmental issue is as present in public perception as the topic of plastics and microplastics in the oceans.
