Advising for Prospective Students
Last week, pupils from all over Germany came to Aachen to get informed about courses of study at the University.
Last week, numerous young people from all over Germany attended the RWTH Aachen Advising Days, hosted by the University’s Student Advice Center. The potential prospective students had the opportunity to find out more about the different courses of study, student life at the University and in Aachen, as well as funding opportunities and career prospects.
Furthermore, experienced RWTH students were present to answer questions, such as: What happens in the first few weeks? Where do I get information on my timetable? Is it much more difficult than at school? What are the exams like?
Many of the pupils present took an interest in the engineering degree programs, and some even had clear ideas concerning courses of choice for their subsequent Master’s studies. Those who asked our advisors how to best prepare for their favorite engineering program were advised to participate in the mathematics bridge course, which is offered in the weeks before the start of the winter semester. Alternatively, they can enrol in the online math course, which is available at all times.
The Advising Days, which take place in January, form only a part of the services of the Student Advice Center. RWTH student advisors take part in national higher education fairs, and they visit schools to present the course offerings of the University. Furthermore, they invite students to visit RWTH Aachen to attend classes and visit departments.
Support for Enrolled Students
Those who choose to enroll at RWTH Aachen receive continuous support during their studies. At times, students who are in the midst of a course of study develop doubts about their choice of degree and whether it makes sense to continue their studies. As Dr. Mandana Biegi, head of the Student Advice Center explains, “many students come to us when they encounter problems during their studies.” A team of trained psychologists advises such students in all problems that affect their studies in individual conversations. They help students accurately assess their situation, provide information, and support students in navigating crises.
Furthermore, the Student Advice Center works in close collaboration with the service centers and departmental advisors of the faculties. It offers a comprehensive continuing education program to make sure that students are professionally advised on the different courses of study and their individual requirements.
