Creating the Basis for Sustainable Electric Mobility


GreenBatt competence cluster now launched as part of Germany's Battery Research Factory strategy


The greenBatt cluster, which is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), has now been launched with an online kick-off event.

The mission of the cluster is to establish a closed-loop battery lifecycle to provide the basis for a sustainable electric mobility. In close collaboration with industry, researchers from 34 departments at German universities and research institutions are working together in the greenBatt project to develop and implement innovative technologies, methods and tools for an energy- and material-efficient battery lifecycle as well as closed material cycles.

In addition to investigating how best to design the different stages of the battery life cycle, the researchers are seeking to develop efficient recycling technologies and to improve the integration of recovered materials in battery cell production. Another aim of the project is to increase the availability and quality of data on which to base the development of lifecycle models and tools.

GreenBatt is part part or the overarching Battery Research Factory strategy funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and receives funding in the amount of about 30 million euros.

The competence cluster is coordinated by Professor Christoph Herrmann, TU Braunschweig and Fraunhofer Institute for Surface Engineering and Thin Films IST; Professor Alexander Michaelis, Fraunhofer Institute for Ceramic Technologies and Systems IKTS; and Professor Bernd Friedrich, Institute of Process Metallurgy and Metal Recycling IME, RWTH Aachen University.
