Award for Dr. Tobias Beck

04/05/2017

Dr. Tobias Beck from the RWTH Institute of Inorganic Chemistry was awarded with the 2017 Industrie-Club Science Award on May 3, 2017.

The award is offered in conjunction with the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences, Humanities, and the Arts and is awarded annually to young scientists for research that merits application in industrial manufacturing or in the optimization of manufacturing processes. The award is endowed with 20,000 euros.

35-year-old Beck was recognized for his work in nanotechnology. He succeeded in precisely spacing nanoparticles in materials. This was made possible by protein containers, which have a defined size and shape. This makes it possible for future innovative nanomaterials to be manufactured that have diverse and promising potential applications ranging from optoelectronics to biomedical engineering. The research results will be applied and further developed in collaboration with Forschungszentrum Jülich, JARA FIT and JARA SOFT within the framework of the Jülich Aachen Research Alliance, and University Hospital Aachen.

The award recipient studied chemistry at RWTH and the University of Göttingen. After completing his doctoral studies in Göttingen he conducted research at ETH Zürich, completing a Marie Curie Fellowship with funding from the European Union. The chemist has worked at RWTH Aachen since 2014 at the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry as a junior research group leader, funded by a Liebig Fellowship from the Fonds der Chemischen Industrie.

Beck has previously been a recipient at RWTH of project funding for unconventional and interdisciplinary ideas. He additionally received research funds for his RWTH start up "Protein."
