Description

Working toward a doctoral degree can be a quite challenging endeavor, as students are required to meet several demands from personal and professional areas of life: planning and execution of scientific work deadlines, coordinating meetings and group projects, ongoing communication with colleagues and supervisors, finding a balance between work and private life. It is not always easy for doctoral students to negotiate and meet all these requirements and at the same time remain efficient and healthy. In fact, increase in stress level is quite common during this period of life, as multiple demands can overwhelm a person’s capacity to cope efficiently and adjust in healthy ways.

Objective

This training seminar is aimed at international PhD candidates interested in managing academic and personal sources of stress effectively and in a healthy manner. During the seminar, we wish to raise awareness about stress in general and personal stressors in particular, and demonstrate a wide range of strategies, involving the mind and the body, so that participants build a flexible coping repertoire which will enable them to deal effectively with daily stressors.

Content

  • Psychoeducation about stress, triggers and maintenance of stress.

  • Cognitive, emotional and behavioral patterns that interfere with our perception and evaluation of situations.

  • Healthy ways to respond to stress cognitively, emotionally and behaviorally that promote resilience, mental and physical health.

  • Body-based strategies to promote awareness of somatic responses to stress and promotion of physical relaxation.

  • Answer participants’ questions about stress-related issues or topics of concern.

Theoretical bases:

This training seminar is based on cognitive-behavioral concepts. Special importance is attached to the mind-body connection/unity and the individual potential for development and transformation of one’s own mental and physiological processes.

An essential component of the seminar is its group format which opts for raising awareness about the universal aspect of stress, which hopefully contributes to relief via relativism and encourages interactive creativity in the process of learning to cope with stress.

Note: Please do not forget to wear comfortable clothes!
