Concert in the “Music Lab” Series

Under the musical direction of Justus Thorau, the Aachen Symphony Orchestra will be performing at the RWTH Institute of Hydraulic Engineering and Water Resources Management on September 28, 2017.

 

Also in this new season, the Aachen Symphony Orchestra will be going on a concert tour through various RWTH Aachen University institutes as part of the “Music Lab” concert series. To start off, RWTHextern and the Aachen Symphony Orchestra are inviting audiences to come to the Institute of Hydraulic Engineering and Water Resources Management, IWW for short, at Mies-van-der Rohe-Straße 17 in Aachen on Thursday, September 28, 2017, at 8pm.

At the Institute of Hydraulic Engineering and Water Resources, headed by Professor Hoger Schüttrumpf, research and teaching activities revolve around topics such as hydrology or commercial hydraulic engineering design, right up to the planning and the execution of construction work on water power plants and river dams. At the institute's hydraulics laboratory, the Aachen Symphony Orchestra will be performing symphonic music under the direction of Justus Thorau fittingly based on the theme of water. The event will be moderated by Christoph Lang and Holger Schüttrumpf.

Several bodies of water have made it into the general symphonic orchestral repertoire, of course. On the program thus can be found Händel's renowned Water Music; but also musical renderings of aquatic animals or other life forms are given, which are based on literary sources or other representations from the visual arts. Furthermore, extraordinary compositions are presented, in which the water itself is being musicalized and brought into the focus of attention. The highlight of the concert will be the performance of “The Sorcerer's Apprentice” by Paul Dukas, made popular by the Disney movie “Fantasia.” It is quite easy to perceive how the titular character is fighting with the magic spell that has gotten out-of-control – at the end, the water is literally right up to his neck.

Admission is 7.50 euros for students, regular admission is 30 euros.
