Support for Future STEM Teachers at RWTH Aachen
Kickoff of MILeNa project in North Rhine-Westphalia
The program to support future STEM teachers, known as MILeNa, aims to increase the number of teachers desparately needed in STEM subjects, science, technology, engineering, and math, in the future. RWTH Aachen is partnering with eleven schools from North Rhine-Westphalia to offer interested school students a practical look at the STEM teaching profession. The adolescents from the 10th or 11th grades temporarily assume the role of a STEM teacher at their school or nearby. They will also participate in one and multiday workshops at RWTH, in which they will learn how to plan and implement lesson plans for the sciences and apply theory in practical exercises. Additionally, they will learn about teacher training in the STEM subjects.
The kickoff event for the MILeNa program begins Tuesday, September 26, 2017, at 12:30pm in room HKW 1, second floor, HKW lecture building "Toaster“ at RWTH Aachen, Wüllnerstraße 1 (behind the SuperC). 50 school students from North Rhine-Westphalia are participating in the event.
MILeNa is funded through joint efforts of the federal and state governments to actively promote high-equality teacher training by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. The program is supported by the zdi-Netzwerk Aachen und Kreis Heinsberg under the sponsorship of the city of Aachen's Department of Economics, Science, and Europe. As part an offensive titled "Zukunft durch Innovation.NRW" (zdi) or "Future Through Innovation.NRW", the zdi-Netzwerk Aachen und Kreis Heinsberg aims to increase the youth's interest in an apprenticeship or studies in the STEM subjects science, technology, engineering, and math, and to support them in these endeavours. There are currently 50 regional STEM networks in NRW, in which local and regional representatives are collaborating to create sustainable structures and different measures for the effective promotion of youth in technology and science. As part of this NRW-wide initiative the zdi-Netzwerk Aachen und Kreis Heinsberg is a regional network with over 50 partners from the school-university-economy triangle.
