FAIR Data Spaces Project Launched

18/06/2021

Funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the FAIR Data Spaces project has now been launched with participation from RWTH Aachen University.

In this project, the federated secure data infrastructure GAIA-X and the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) join forces to develop a common cloud-based data space for industry and research following the FAIR data principles (findable, accessible, interoperable, reusable).

The project creates a roadmap for the collaboration of the two initiatives, clarifies ethical and legal frameworks for data sharing between science and industry, develops common technical foundations, and demonstrates the use of GAIA-X technologies for the provision and use of research data along FAIR principles in different scientific disciplines and industries.

NFDI and numerous leading universities in NFDI consortia represent the application domain of science and research. GAIA-X, which is focused towards business and industry, is represented by the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft and Atos as a representative of the companies participating in GAIA-X.

The project is coordinated by Fraunhofer FIT and co-coordinated by NFDI. Project partners are Fraunhofer ISST, Justus Liebig University Giessen, TIB – German National Library of Science and Technology, the University of Cologne, Leipzig University, the IT Center at RWTH Aachen university, FIZ Karlsruhe – Leibniz Institute for Information Infrastructure, University Hospital Heidelberg (UKHD), the University of Tübingen, Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), the University of Marburg, the University of Münster, ZBW – Leibniz Information Centre for Economics, and Atos.
