Researchers Meet to Discuss "Wonder Material" Graphene
RWTH and AMO GmbH to host Graphene Flagship meeting with 150 experts from all over Europe
Between December 18 and 20, 2017, RWTH and AMO GmbH are jointly hosting a meeting of the "Graphene Flagship" research project. 150 researchers from 23 European countries are expected to participate. The meeting of the “Electronics and Photonics Integration“division focuses on the current state of research as well as on future objectives.
The Graphene Flagship receives funding of one billion Euros in total from the European Commission for a ten-year project period. The European-wide research initiative seeks to bring researchers together to take the “wonder material” from the lab through to application in industry and society.
Graphene is a two-dimensional atomic crystal consisting of only one layer of carbon atoms. As the thinnest material in the world it has a wide range of potential uses, such as in micro- and nanoelectronics, in medicine, or in energy storage.
The collaborative activities are structured by topic in six divisions with 20 working groups. Currently 120 partners from industry and research are part of the collaboration, including RWTH Aachen University and AMO GmbH, who recently established the new Aachen Graphene & 2D Materials Center.
RWTH professor and AMO managing director Max Lemme, as well as RWTH professors Markus Morgenstern, Renato Negra and Christoph Stampfer are all active in the “Graphene Flagship.” As head of Division 3, Dr. Daniel Neumaier from AMO also significantly contributes to the large-scale project: the largest division of initiative is concerned with electronic and photonic components made of graphene and related two-dimensional materials.
The Aachen researchers focus on the production and analysis of graphene layers and as well as the realization of electronic and optoelectronic components to be used in fields such as data communication and sensor technology and for the Internet of Things.
