Experts Convene to Discuss Flood Control

The 48th International Hydraulic Engineering Symposium will have a focus on revetments, dikes and dams.

 

Technical flood protection is an important tool of flood risk management. The 48th International Hydraulic Engineering Symposium, IWASA for short, will discuss current developments in the field. The event is scheduled to take place at the AGIT Technology Center in Aachen between January 18 and 19, 2018.

Revetments, dikes and dams are among the most important constructions in hydraulic engineering, fulfilling functions such as bank protection, flood protection, and waterways engineering. Planning, construction, maintenance and monitoring of these facilities are cost-intensive and require comprehensive expertise on the part of all involved institutions and partners. Failure of such structures may have severe consequences.

Furthermore, topics such as green engineering, life-cycle engineering, and intelligent geotextiles have gained in significance over the last years in the field and will be discussed at the conference as well.

For the first time, IWASA has joined forces with the Institute of Geotechnical Engineering at the University of Siegen: The Siegen Symposium on the“Security of Dams, Dikes and Reservoirs” will take place at the same time in Aachen. The RWTH Institute of Hydraulic Engineering and the Siegen institute have been successfully collaborating for many years.

The recognized hydraulic engineering conference is primarily targeted at civil engineers working or doing research in the fields of hydraulic engineering and water management, but is also open to a more general audience. About 500 national and international participants are expected to attend the conference.
