Award for RWTH Professor Gabriele Pradel

26/02/2018

The German Society for Hygiene and Microbiology awarded RWTH professor Gabriele Pradel with the Senior Scientist Prize for her work on the parasite Plasmodium falciparum, which causes malaria.

The aim of her research is to investigate molecular mechanisms during the sexual phase of the malaria parasite, as these play a crucial role in the transmission of the parasite. There is particular potential here to block this phase and thus fight malaria.

47-year-old Pradel studied biology at the University of Gießen, completed her doctorate at Goethe University in Frankfur am Main, and later earned her habilitation at the University of Würzburg. She first came to RWTH Aachen in 2012. Since 2014 she has held the Heisenberg Professorship, funded by the German Research Foundation, and led the Cellular and Applied Infection Biology Research Group.
