Online Seminar on the Recent Floods in Germany

Together with the Association of Engineers for Water Management, Waste Management and Land Improvement (BWK), and HochwasserKompetenzCentrum e.V. Köln, the Institute of Hydraulic Engineering and Water Management at RWTH Aachen University, headed by Professor Holger Schüttrumpf, will be hosting a BWK Online Seminar on the 2021 floods in Germany. The seminar is scheduled to take place Thursday, September 23, 2021, from 1 to 3pm.

 

There will be featuring four expert presentations providing insights into the origin and development of this extreme weather event. The enormous precipitation that fell in the catchment area within a few hours led to peak discharges that flowed with high velocity and force through river valleys that were deeply incised in some places. Locally, the assumptions of the flood hazard maps were clearly exceeded. The unprecedented impact of the floods is partly due to densification of development, transverse structures, and increasing urban development in potential floodplains.

Due to the failure of sewage treatment plants and the temporary breakdown of drinking water supplies, the flooding of oil tanks, and the destruction of supply and disposal pathways, ecological damage also occurred as a result of the flood event. This requires a rethinking of planning and construction with regard to the dimensioning and robustness of technical facilities.

The online seminar will therefore not only focus on hydraulic engineering and water management aspects, but also on problems and deficits that became apparent during and after the flood event.
