Dates and Deadlines
The Master's course of study in computer science teacher training is composed of a comprehensive, mandatory module Computer Science Subject-Didactics, which includes an imbedded practical semester, three technical elective modules, and a Master's thesis that can be completed in computer science.
Subject-Didactic and Practical School Studies
The module Computer Science Subject-Didactics consists of a seminar, that prepares students for the practical semester and the school research component with lesson plans and exemplary trials, as well as an additional seminar in the following semester, that accompanies the school research component. Students learn to practically implement the technical and methodological skills acquired during studies in a targeted manner with school students in lessons.
The final module exam reviews the skills acquired in both semesters and takes into consideration both the reflection of the practical school experiences and the school research component.
In the Schülerlabor Informatik – InfoSphere students supervise school students of varying ages and gain practical experience in the implementation of whiteboards, smart phones, multitouch tables, pads, and other modern technologies at a non-school location.
Students advance their technical skills in three elective modules. They can choose from theoretical, technical, practical, and applied computer science. Modules can be selected from various areas and combined with one another with no restrictions. The module catalog in the exam regulation (see below) offers an overview of the spectrum of specialization possibilities.
Start in Summer Semester
Students beginning studies in the winter semester will take both the seminar and practical semester in the first and second academic semesters. The timing shifts to the second and third semester for those beginning in the summer semester. The elective modules are then completed in the first semester.
The Faculty has several international partner universities with which it has well-established links, such as collaborations in teaching and research as well as exchange programs such as ERASMUS+. An overview of all RWTH Aachen exchange programs can be found at: Overview of Exchange Options. Information on the feasibility of stays abroad provides the Exchange Student Advisory Service of the Department or the Departmental Advisors.
Initial university degree
An initial university degree is required to begin a Master's teacher training program. The exact technical educational background required is summarized in the examination regulation. The examination board is responsible for determining if admissions requirements have been fulfilled.
In order to be admitted to teaching practice students must provide documentation of skills in two foreign languages. The university entrance qualification typically fulfills this. Students, who did not learn German as a native speaker and acquired their university entrance qualification in German, only need to submit proof of knowledge of one additional language.
You can find information from the NRW Ministry of Schools about the career prospects for various fields of teaching through 2039/40 in the brochure Prognoses on the Job Market for Teachers in North Rhine-Westphalia (de).
Exam regulations regulate academic goals and prerequisites, the course of study layout, and exam procedures. The appendix to the regulations contains the description of the modules, from which the course of study is composed.
