New Compressor Rig for RWTH Aachen

The RWTH Aachen Institute of Jet Propulsion and Turbomachinery has a new axial compressor rig now in operation. The development of the rig is the result of close collaboration with MTU Aero Engines.


With its 3D-blading and comprehensive measurement technology the rig is ideal for teaching and research at RWTH. Axial compressors are used for example in engine architectures to generate electricity using gas turbines and to extract processing gases.

"With a great deal of energy and self-initiative, the project team has acquired a highly modern, 2.5-step axial compressor rig. It fulfills the highest quality demands," explains Dr. Michael Buaer, head of the compressor technology program at MTU Aero Engines. "The rig has modern 3D-blading and will have a permanent place in MTU's technology validation strategy."

Professor Peter Jeschke, chair of the Institute for Jet Propulsion and Turbomachinery added: "The conceptual design for the new rig was significantly funded by the LEMCOTEC European research program and the federal aerospace research program."
