Closing Event: A Good Academic Start in Engineering 2018
2018 saw the fourth installment of the joint project between FH Aachen University of Applied Sciences and RWTH Aachen University.
This summer semester, 193 prospective students took a close look at academic life at FH and at RWTH. They participated in the “A Good Academic Start in Engineering” project (GSE), which gave them the opportunity to attend basic courses for engineers, such as mathematics and technical mechanics. They also benefited from a framework program offering participation in tutorials, study groups, mentoring sessions, and so-called “role model rounds.”
Providing Orientation Support
These offerings were designed to support the prospective students in finding out for themselves which university and what subject, such as electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or mechatronics, best suits them. Shall I study at RWTH? Or rather at FH? Is an engineering program the right choice for me? If yes, which one?
Before embarking on the exam and internship period, the students participated in the closing event of the project, reflecting on and discussing their experience with the project teams led by Professor Aloys Krieg, RWTH's vice-rector for teaching, and Professor Martina Klocke, vice-dean of mechanical engineering and mechatronics at FH Aachen.
The Past Months in Review
At the event, after a welcome address by project manager Maike Sube, the project participants provided feedback on their experience and made suggestions for further improvement. Moderated by Vera Richert from FH, the students reviewed the joint events of the summer semester.
Furthermore, the future full-time students had the opportunity to write comments and suggestions on a feedback wall. According to project participant Felix Lamping, “the GSE project provides an excellent opportunity for school leavers to prepare for university study. The team was great, and we felt at home in Aachen right from the start.” And as Claas Klatte wrote: “The GSE, with all its offerings, was a great experience and provided me with support in deciding on my future career. I hope the project will be continued to benefit future students as well!”
Integration into the “Electrical Engineering with Orientation Semester“ Course of Study
In 2019, the GSS will be offered in a different format: In order to make it possible for participants to receive Federal Training Assistance (Bafög), the various GSS components will be integrated into the “Electrical Engineering with Orientation Semester“ collaborative course of study. Further formats are under development. If you are interested in the possible directions the projects may take, please refer to the Guter Studienstart website or contact project managers Vera Richert and Maike Sube.
