RWTH Contributes to New Helmholtz Graduate School
RWTH Aachen University, Forschungszentrum Jülich, the University of Cologne, the German Aerospace Center, and the Max-Planck-Institut für Eisenforschung have joined forces to establish the Helmholtz School for Data Science in Life, Earth and Energy, HDS-LEE for short. It is one of five graduate schools currently being established in Germany.
The aim of the school is to drive the digitalization in research and produce outstanding data scientists to support domain-specific research activities. HDS-LEE will receive about six million euros in funding from the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers. In total, the partners will also contribute six million euros to the project.
In almost all areas of science and business, there is a huge demand for professionals and researchers who, in addition to their subject-specific expertise, are specialists in the methods and tools of the information and data sciences. This demand calls for appropriate educational initiatives.
"HDS-LEE offers RWTH the opportunity to collaborate with outstanding partners in the region and to further expand the University’s strengths in the fields of simulation and data sciences," said Professor Alexander Mitsos, director of the RWTH Laboratory for Process Systems Engineering and co-director of Energy Systems Engineering section of the Institute of Energy and Climate Control at Forschungszentrum Jülich.
Professor Mitsos and Professor Wolfgang Wiechert, head of the Systems Biotechnology section of the Institute of Bio- and Geosciences at Forschungszentrum Jülich will form the management team of HDS-LEE.
