RWTH Professor Receives VDE Ring of Honor

21/11/2018

During the 2018 VDE Tec Summit in Berlin, the German Association of Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Information Technology, VDE, honored Professor Jens-Rainer Ohm for his outstanding scientific work on the efficient compression of digital video signals, including redundancy reduction and irrelevancy reduction.

His research on the digital processing and compression of video signals and his contributions to the development of standards such as MPEG-7, AVC and HEVC are internationally recognized. HEVC, for example, is a video compression standard specification that enables efficient delivery in ultra-high-definition content over multiple distribution channels, including TV, the Internet, and mobile devices such as tablets and mobile phones.

Jens-Rainer Ohm is the fifth researcher from the RWTH Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology to receive the VDE Ring of Honor.

The award has been presented every two years since 1958. This year, the VDE Tec Summit had a focus on the 125th anniversary of the VDE and on the topic of digitalization in business, industry and society.

Other researchers receiving the VDE Ring of Honor were professors Peter Noll from TU Berlin and Helmut F. Schlaak from TU Darmstadt.
