Laser Precision Tools Are Changing the World
RWTH expert explains the research and technology behind the 2018 Nobel Prize in physics.
This year’s Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Arthur Ashkin, Gérard Mourou, and Donna Strickland for their groundbreaking inventions in the field of laser physics: so-called optical tweezers, a technique for capturing and studying microscopic objects, and “chirped pulse amplification,” a method that allows scientists to produce intense pulses of light for uses in science and industry.
These pulses can be used to precisely cut away materials such biological tissue without damaging its surroundings, which is highly useful in corrective eye surgery, for example.
Public Lecture on December 1
The first lecture in the “RWTH Explains the 2018 Nobel Prize” series, which is hosted by RWTHextern, is scheduled to take place on Saturday, December 1, at 11am, in Lecture Hall H03, C.A.R.L. Lecture Hall Complex.
Laser expert Professor Reinhart Poprawe, RWTH Chair of Laser Technology and Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology, will introduce a variety of laser precision tools that are changing our world.
