Felling of Trees on Melaten Campus
Due to the extended period of heat and drought in the summer of 2018, the trees of the Melaten woods in the area between Campus-Boulevard and Schurzelter Straße have been susceptible to a severe infestation with bark beetles.
This has caused numerous pines to die. These dead trees will have to be removed from the woods during the winter months in order to protect the remaining, healthy trees from infestation in the coming spring.
A professional logging contractor will thus be working on thinning the stand of pine trees, with an expected start day of February 11, 2019. The responsible environmental authorities have been informed. Once the tree population has recovered from the bark beetle infestation and has reached a stable condition, the Melaten woods will be reforested with native tree species, set to begin in the spring of 2020.
