Digitalization of the German Pit and Quarry Industry
RWTH pools its expertise in the PROmining research project funded by the AiF.
In the PROmining research project, the Institute of Mineral Resources Engineering (MRE), headed by Professor Bernd Lottermoser, and FIR e. V. at RWTH Aachen University, which is under the scientific direction of Professor Günther Schuh and the management of Professor Volker Stich, are developing a demonstrator of a virtual platform that will enable companies in the pit and quarry industry to generate knowledge about the current capacity utilization of their operations and to forecast demand based on internal and external data. To this end, MRE and FIR are pooling their expertise in digitization and business transformation as well as their specialist and industry knowledge. The German Federation of Industrial Research Associations, AiF for short, and the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Action, BMWK for short, are providing funding in the amount of 420,000 euros.
Ultimately, the virtual platform demonstrator should make it possible to anticipate fluctuations in demand based on forecasts and then initiate appropriate measures. The envisaged platform solution particularly addresses the needs of small and medium-sized enterprises in the German pit and quarry industry.
Building on the results to date, the company-neutral conceptual design, development, and programming of the demonstrator will be realized in 2022. Finally, the implementation, testing, and validation of the platform demonstrator will be realized in selected company networks of the committee that accompanies the project. An impressive transfer of results and exchange of experiences is already underway, for example, with workshops, interviews, and plant visits with industrial partners. The committee accompanying the project is always looking for new participants to join. You benefit from regular exchanges with research and industry and can utilize the results in your company immediately. The third PROmining Day will take place on March 17, 2022.
