Supporting Professor Andrij Pich’s initiative – medication, bandages, and other medical products are urgently needed.

FAQ on the War in Ukraine

RWTH Aachen University and Uniklinik RWTH Aachen are committed to helping the people in Ukraine. A fundraising campaign has been launched to support medical staff in the hospitals in Ukraine by supplying them with urgently needed medication, bandages, and other medical supplies. We thank Professor Andrij Pich from the Institute of Technical and Macromolecular Chemistry at RWTH and DWI-Leibniz Institute for Interactive Materials for initiating this campaign.

Pich was born and grew up in Lviv, Ukraine, and later studied chemistry in his home country. At the age of 23, he moved to Dresden, Germany, to earn his doctorate, and after a stay in Canada, he joined RWTH in 2009. The 46-year-old has spent half his life in Ukraine, and his family and many friends still live there. “When I see what is happening to my people at the moment, I am devastated,” he says.

Pich has already been able to recruit many comrades-in-arms at RWTH for the planned aid campaign. University management and the management of Uniklinik RWTH Aachen expressly support it. A designated donation account has already been set up for the RWTH and Uniklinik RWTH Aachen Help Ukraine campaign. “We do not want to stand idly by and are also asking for your help. Please join us in donating to support medical care for the sick and injured in Ukraine,” explains the University’s Rectorate.

In Pich’s family and circle of friends, there are a number of doctors who work in hospitals, especially in Lviv, but also in Kyiv. They gave him a firsthand account of the war-related shortage of bandages, antibiotics, anesthetics, and other medical supplies. The warehouses are empty because medicines and bandages for treating the severely injured have been transported to the country’s embattled east. But the first of the wounded from the combat zones are now also arriving in Lviv. Doctors on the ground have drawn up lists of urgently needed materials. “We know exactly what is needed. Some of the medical personnel there are empty-handed,” Pich emphasizes.

Thanks to the RWTH and Uniklinik campaign donations, the drugstore of Uniklinik RWTH Aachen can now start procuring the urgently needed supplies for Ukrainian clinics. “We are sending a humanitarian signal and using these donations in a targeted manner,” emphasizes RWTH Rector Ulrich Rüdiger on behalf of the RWTH Rectorate.

Pich will accompany the aid transport himself to the Polish-Ukrainian border. From there, his friends and relatives will take over and deliver the goods to local hospitals.
