The great response to the University’s and Uniklinik’s appeal for donations made it possible to launch an aid campaign in support of Ukrainian hospitals.

Convoys of aid funded by the “RWTH and Uniklinik RWTH Aachen help Ukraine” campaign are still on their way to the Polish-Ukrainian border. In the meantime, more than 930,000 euros have been donated to the campaign. The drugstore of RWTH Aachen University Hospital is using these funds to procure medical equipment and medication for Ukraine. In addition, some institutions and individuals donated additional medical products and drugs to support the campaign.

“This is a strong signal of solidarity with the people in Ukraine. We are very pleased with the amazing support we have received, and we want to say thank you to all our donors,” said RWTH Rector Ulrich Rüdiger. “This humanitarian catastrophe has touched many people here at Uniklinik. We would like to thank everyone involved in coordinating the aid response so quickly and efficiently – this is the result of effective teamwork,” adds Professor Thomas H. Ittel, Medical Director of Uniklinik RWTH Aachen.

In March, the first two 40-ton trucks started from Aachen to the Polish-Ukrainian border. Professor Andrij Pich from the Institute of Technical and Macromolecular Chemistry at RWTH and DWI-Leibniz Institute for Interactive Materials accompanied the aid transport. He initiated the fundraising campaign in support of his home country, which received strong support from the University and Uniklinik communities.

Pich was born and grew up in Lviv, Ukraine; in his family and circle of friends, there are a number of doctors who work in hospitals, especially in Lviv, but also in Kyiv. They gave him a firsthand account of the war-related shortage of bandages, antibiotics, anesthetics, and other medical supplies. The supplies from Aachen are expected to provide relief, supporting doctors on site with painkillers and narcotics for operations.

The donations received so far help to ensure basic medical care for the injured. But the need for further support increases dramatically with each day of war. Special equipment is needed for the treatment of war casualties, for example. For this reason, the campaign is still in need of financial support.

The donation account for the relief action is:
