Umbrella Symposium at RWTH Aachen University
After a two-year break, researchers from Aachen, Jülich and Haifa came together once again. The Umbrella Awards have been presented.
Founded in 1983, the Umbrella Partnership between RWTH Aachen University, Forschungszentrum Jülich and the Technion - Israel Institute of Technology aims to promote excellent research and technology cooperation which allows strong partners to benefit from one another. The annual Umbrella Symposium is the highlight of the scientific cooperation. Now, after a two-year break due to the pandemic, the symposium was held again. As it was organized by RWTH Aachen University, it took place in Aachen. The theme of the three-day symposium "Life Science and Engineering: Data Analytics, Neurosciences and Multiscale Biomedical Engineering" combines biomedical research with modern methods of data analysis and the development of new technologies.
For example, analysis of information processing by the brain, analysis of data with artificial intelligence, and implementation in new neuromorphic computing technologies were the focus of a number of presentations at the symposium. It also addressed how developments in engineering and technological advances have led to new diagnostic and therapeutic possibilities in various medical fields.
Presentation of the Umbrella Awards
Among the highlights of the symposium was the presentation of Umbrella Awards to three outstanding young researchers: One of the awards went to Dr. David Mehler, who has been a Junior Principal Investigator Fellow at the University Hospital of RWTH Aachen University for several months where he established a research group on clinical applications of non-invasive neurotechnology. The two other awards were presented to Dr. Gabriela Figueroa Miranda, Institute for Biological Information (IBI-3) at Forschungszentrum Jülich, and Assistant Professor Assaf Zinger of the Technion.
"The financial support associated with the award is intended to lay the foundation for further cooperation and personal exchange between Germany and Israel. This should also strengthen the young scientists concerned in international competition and promote their mobility," says Professor Joachim Mayer, who is both administrative and scientific coordinator of the Umbrella Partnership for RWTH.
The next Umbrella Symposium will be held at the Technion in Haifa in 2023. Then the Umbrella Partnership will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the trilateral alliance.
