RWTH is now a Fairtrade University
The award recognizes the University's commitment to fair trade.
RWTH Aachen University will now be a Fairtrade University for two years; it was the students and employees who encouraged the University to apply for the distinction. In a process lasting just under two years, the University's sustainability awareness was reviewed on the basis of five criteria. The title is awarded for a limited period of time; for renewal, continued fulfillment of the criteria must be demonstrated. The award of the title makes the University's commitment visible; it contributes to sustainable development and takes responsibility for the impact of its own consumption in international growing regions. For example, when catering for guests, value is placed on fair trade products.
The certificate was presented to Professor Niklas von der Aßen, RWTH's Rectorate Officer for Sustainability, by Dieter Overath, Executive Director of Fairtrade Germany, as part of the Sustainability Days and GreenTech Expo, which is running at Templergraben until June 24, 2022. RWTH is working intensively on the topic of fair trade with the Studierendenwerk and the city of Aachen, which were represented by the deputy head of the gastronomic department of the Studierendenwerk Aachen, Peter Schröder, and Mayor Hilde Scheidt. Frederik Roßbach represented RWTH's Fairtrade group as a student member.
