RWTH Presents a Teaching Award
A special teaching award for sustainability has been presented for the first time.
RWTH Aachen University has been recognizing innovative achievements with the Teaching Award since 2001. In 2021, a special teaching award for sustainability was also announced. Professor Aloys Krieg, RWTH Vice-Rector for Teaching, presented the awards, with two prizes being awarded in both categories.
The 2021 Teaching Award in the "Lecturers" category goes to Professor Sandra Korte-Kerzel, holder of the Chair of Materials Physics, and to Associate Professor Sebastian Daniel Reinartz. Korte-Kerzel uses interactive experiments and videos in her lectures; she even makes some of the videos herself. Students especially praise her efforts during the pandemic. Reinartz builds didactically on problem solving by the students. He used exercises, for example on the computed tomography scanner, to discuss radiation protection features as well as behavioral measures. During the lockdown, live recordings from the computed tomography scanner were played into the online seminar of the Department of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology.
Professor Carmen Leicht-Scholten of the Gender and Diversity in Engineering Department and the Geography/Economic Geography Student Council receive the Special Teaching Award for Sustainability. Leicht-Scholten is being honored for her teaching of skills on socially sustainable engineering design across faculty lines. She also encourages students to consider sustainability and social responsibility and to discuss their own roles. The Geography/Economic Geography Student Council regularly hosts film and discussion nights on geographic topics, particularly sustainability. During the pandemic, film screenings and discussions took place online; the discussions are always moderated by the student council.
