When Art Meets Science
Children, young people, and researchers can let their creativity run wild in the Concrete ART Project 2022, organized by the Collaborative Research Center/Transregio 280.
The project is a cooperation between youth art schools in Aachen and Dresden and the CRC/Transregio 280 – Design Strategies for Material-Minimized Carbon Reinforced Concrete Structures – Principles of a New Approach to Construction. Children and young people should find creative inspiration for the topic "Building with concrete in the future".
For one week, the young participants will experiment, research, and design different ideas together with scientists at the "Bleiberger Fabrik", a cultural facility in Aachen. They will learn about different types of concrete – a particularly versatile material – and develop their version of the construction of the future with the help of researchers and art lecturers. The ideas are to be implemented in the form of different artworks and presented through various media, such as images, models, sculptures, and material collages.
The CRC/Transregio 280 is developing new approaches for the construction of the future. More than 50 participants from RWTH Aachen University, TU Dresden, and the Leibniz Institute are researching the topic of material-minimized construction with carbon reinforced concrete on an interdisciplinary basis. The central source of ideas for the building blocks of geometry is biology, primarily botany, but also mathematics and art. The aim is to build in an energy-efficient manner, conserving resources without sacrificing quality and durability.
