Canceling Module Grades if Your Course is Completed in the Standard Period of Study

Hand with ballpoint pen fills out form

Most of the study program or subject-specific examination regulations allow you to cancel module grades if you complete your studies within the standard period of study. In this case, the grade of one or more modules is replaced by "passed" and is therefore not included in the calculation of the overall grade. However, the original grade is shown in a separate section.

To find out which modules can be canceled in your program, please refer to your program-specific or subject-specific exam regulations, which can be found in the Official Announcements. As a rule, you will find the necessary information in the paragraph "Assessment of examination achievements and formation of grades".

The module grade is canceled upon request. This form must be filled out to submit such a request. Please send this to your advisor, if possible by email. The application must be submitted to us no later than one week after the results of your last exam have been entered. Of course, you can also submit it earlier. Please note, however, that we will still only implement the grade cancellation as soon as your degree has been awarded and it is clear that you have completed your studies in the standard period of study. Once a module grade cancellation has been implemented, it cannot be reversed.

Extended Individual Standard Period of Study

If you complete your studies within your individual standard period of study, you may cancel module grades. Due to the Supplementary Provisions effective from the 2020 summer semester through the 2021/22 winter semester, the individual standard period of study was increased by a maximum of four semesters. This means that you may be able to make use of the module grade cancellation provision even though you have exceeded the actual standard period of study for your degree program. Therefore, please make sure to check your individual standard period of study. You can find this on the BAföG Certificate, which you can generate in RWTHonline under Certificates.

I am studying a teacher training-related bachelor’s degree. Can I have modules canceled in each of my subjects?

Yes, you can usually have one or more grades canceled in each of the two teaching subjects. There are no module grade cancelations in the pedagogy program. You will find further information in your subject-specific examination regulations.

Will my overall grade improve if I have a module grade canceled?

No, canceling a module grade does not always lead to an improvement in the overall grade. We, therefore, recommend you calculate the effects of the grade cancellation yourself in advance. Once a module grade has been canceled, this is final and cannot be reversed.
