RWTH Professor Receives NRW Innovation Award

The Director the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology (ILT) and RWTH Chair of Laser Technology, Professor Reinhart Poprawe, and his team of laser researchers are the winners of this year's NRW Innovation Award in the category of "innovation." The team members include Dr. Andres Gasser, Dr. Ingomar Kelbassa, Dr. Wilhelm Meiners, and Dr. Konrad Wissenbach.

The NRW Innovation Award, worth €100,000, was presented by Svenja Schulze, the NRW Minister for Innovation, Science, and Research. For over 20 years now, the ILT has been conducting ground-breaking research in the field of additive manufacturing, developing technologies for energy- and resource-efficient production processes. The team has been systematically developing and refining laser processes which today are being used on an industrial scale.

Reinhart Poprawe and his team are the world’s leading experts in the field of Selective Laser Melting (SLM), which makes it possible to manufacture customized components in small batches. Poprawe is also involved in RWTH’s Excellence Cluster, "Integrative Production Technology for High-Wage Countries." Together with an interdisciplinary team of engineers, materials researchers, physicists and economists, he contributes to the development of industrial production systems for mass customisation manufacturing.
