RWTH Scientists Among the World's Most Cited Researchers
Three scientists from Aachen are included in the list of "Highly Cited Researchers" published on November 15, 2022.
The most frequently cited researchers worldwide include the physician Fabian Kiessling, the pharmacist Twan Lammers and the biologist Joost van Dongen. All three were already listed as Highly Cited Researchers in 2021.
Joost van Dongen supervises the teaching and research area Molecular Ecology of the Rhizosphere. There he researches how plants perceive their environment and how they translate this information into biochemical and physiological responses. Van Dongen, born in 1973, studied biology at the universities of Utrecht and Wageningen. Before accepting the appointment at RWTH Aachen University in May 2013, he worked at the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Plant Physiology in Potsdam.
Fabian Kießling has held the Chair of Experimental Molecular Imaging and has been one of the directors of the Helmholtz Institute for Biomedical Engineering at RWTH Aachen University since 2008. Previously, he headed the Molecular Diagnostics Group and the Junior Molecular Imaging Group at the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg. Kießling is one of the pioneers of molecular imaging in Germany and has made significant contributions to volumetric area detector computed tomography, super-resolution and molecular ultrasound imaging, and tumor-targeted nanomedicine therapy. This allows diseases to be better characterized at both the molecular and physiological levels and it allows therapies to be tailored to patients.
Twan Lammers oversees the teaching and research field of nanomedicine and theranostics at RWTH. In 2009, Lammers joined the Institute of Experimental Molecular Imaging as a research group leader and took over the university professorship for Nanomedicine and Theranostics in 2014. In 2012, Lammers received an ERC Starting Grant and in 2019 an ERC Consolidator Grant. He was also awarded two ERC Proof of Concept Grants in 2015 and 2018. His research focuses on pharmaceutical technology, modulation of the tumor microenvironment, and image-guided tumor-targeted drug delivery.
Indicator for the Importance of Publications
The "Highly Cited Researchers" are determined from the publications that are among the top one percent of citations in the "Web of Science" citation index by field and publication year. Accordingly, those researchers whose publication is among the top one percent of most cited publications in their field are included in the list. In science, citations serve as an indicator of the importance of publications and are also seen as a measure of the quality of the work. The more frequently a text is cited, the higher its visibility and thus also the worldwide perception of the author.
