When RWTH Aachen University was founded in 1870 as the polytechnic “Königliche Rheinisch-Westphälische Polytechnische Schule zu Aachen”, its first director, August von Kaven, asserted that it should function as the intermediary link between academia and industry, theory and practice. He declared that technicians contributed a great deal to higher civilisation, which he defined as “Bildung, Wissen und Können” (education, knowledge, and ability). RWTH Aachen University has since remained true to this aspiration, illustrated in our anniversary’s motto “Lernen. Forschen. Machen”: It is of course a university where students learn and scientists conduct research – but RWTH differs from other universities when it comes to how this is implemented: innovations are ultimately driven forward and made palpable, drivable, viewable, tangible, visible – with a large number of strong partners from all over the world. This is what RWTH is all about. This is how we defined it in our excellence strategy: Knowledge. Impact. Networks. I am very happy that we are able to discuss our ideas of higher education at our Science Evening with so many illustrious guests.
