In 2006, the German Research Buildings Program was launched (in accordance with § 91b of German Basic Law). It allows the federal and state governments to work together on projects of national importance.

The purpose of supporting 91b research buildings is to strengthen the infrastructure of German universities so they can compete successfully in national and international research. Funded projects must demonstrate exceptional scientific quality and have an impact that reaches well beyond their local context.

RWTH was exceptionally successful in this funding line and was granted ten research buildings since 2008.
