Deregistering from Exams, Papers, and Projects

Within the designated deregistration period, students can cancel their registration for exams and other assessments directly through the Exams application in the RWTHonline portal. To deregister, go to the “My Exam Dates” tab. You’ll find step-by-step instructions available in the RWTHonline documentation portal.

Certain assessments, referred to as PTNV (assessments without an official exam date), are often scheduled on an individual basis. In most cases, students cannot deregister from these assessments on their own through RWTHonline. If you need to cancel an individually scheduled assessment, please refer to the specific guidance provided by the responsible chair or department.

Final theses have separate guidelines and cannot be deregistered independently via RWTHonline. Details regarding deregistration procedures for final theses are provided in the University’s General Examination Regulations.

Deregistration Deadlines

University-wide deregistration deadlines allow students to cancel exam or assessment registrations without specifying a reason. Generally, students may deregister via RWTHonline up to three business days prior to an exam. Note that Saturdays are considered business days. The deregistration policy for final theses may differ, so please consult RWTH’s General Examination Regulations for more information.

Examples of Deadline Calculations:

  • Example 1: For an exam on Thursday, you can deregister until Monday at 11:59 p.m., provided there is no holiday in between.
  • Example 2: For an exam on Wednesday, deregistration is open until Saturday at 11:59 p.m., if there is no holiday.
  • Example 3: For an exam on Friday, if the preceding Thursday is a holiday, deregistration is allowed until Monday at 11:59 p.m.

In all bachelor’s and master’s degree programs, students may freely deregister and re-register for exams, papers, and projects as often as needed within the deadlines.
